President Paterno
Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening, the new chairman of the National Governors' Association, was humbled at the group's 92nd annual meeting at Penn State the week of July 9. During President Clinton's appearance before the group, Glendening said he felt a buzz go through the convention center. "People were saying, 'There he is. There he is,' " leading Glendening to assume that Clinton had stepped into the corridor. He investigated and found that all the fuss was over Coach Joe Paterno, who had arrived to hear the president's speech.

Penn State is getting lots of flack after it's loss to Minnesota. Many commentators are counting them out of games against Michigan and Michigan State:
Rudy Martzke, TV Sports columnist, USA TODAY:
ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso play down this week's Bowl Championship
Series poll that shows Tennessee in the second spot behind Florida State.
"Florida State, Florida and Virginia Tech control their own destiny," Herbstreit said. "Two of the three will be in the Sugar Bowl. And Wisconsin's in the Rose Bowl with Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne because Penn State will lose this week to Michigan and possibly next week to Michigan State."
Corso said, "Look it up. On Aug. 26, as a response to (founder) Al Neuharth in USA TODAY, I wrote that Florida State would meet Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl, and I'm sticking with it." |
