Up the Coast, down the Coast, the Watcher takes out his notebook

Dateline Sunset Boulevard: The Arizona State Sun Devils are boffo in the Pacific 10. Who would have ever guessed Dick Koetter's pass-happy bunch would be undefeated in the conference and playing for first place this weekend against Washington State in the biggest game on the West Coast. "I still think we have to play our best game as a team," Koetter said earlier this week. "I'm anxious to see us play a complete game on both sides of the ball." The Cougars, who annouced this week that two of its top defensive players have been suspended for violating team rules, are 7 point favorites at home in Pullman, Wash...On the other side of the state, UCLA will try to salvage a mediocre season when it takes on the Washington Huskies. UCLA coach Bob Toledo has three young quarterbacks to choose from to replace Cory Paus, who is out for the season with an ankle injury. The most likely starter is Matt Moore, who led the Bruins to it's victory over Stanford last week. UCLA at 5-3, 2-2, still has a shot at a bowl bid...Another team hoping to keep its bowl chances alive is Oregon State, which opened the season 4-0, then lost 3 straight games, but got straighten out last week with a win over California. The Beavers play host to Arizona, which has yet to win a conference game...USC has the week off but coach Pete Carroll announced that tailback Justin Vargas, who started against Oregon last Saturday in place of Sultan McCullough, will likely start in the team's next game Nov. 9 against Stanford at Palo Alto. Vargas gained 139 yards against the Ducks, looked quicker than McCullough on artificial grass at Autzen Stadium. Stanford Stadium has real grass.
