Grant Noel, the junior QB chosen to start at Virginia Tech after the N.F.L. flight of Michael Vick, injured his knee during weight training on July 18. Noel tore the cartilage in his right knee and will be out up to six weeks while he recovers from surgery. Noel, who saw limited time last year, could miss the Sept. 1 opener against Connecticut.
