| Concussed Colorado QB Calls It Quits |
|
|
| From collegeBLITZ.com staff reports |
|
Craig Ochs, the starting quarterback at Colorado will not play again this season and may permanently sideline himself, it was announced Monday, two weeks after his career was briefly placed in jeopardy when he suffered the third concussion of his Colorado tenure.
Ochs, a junior, said he will apply for a medical redshirt waiver to gain another year of eligibility beyond that of his senior season, but said that he will also withdraw as a student at the University of Colorado and will relinquish his athletic scholarship.
"I was very surprised," said Barnett. "We totally respect his decision and it was a family decision all the way. He wants to pull himself out and see if he can get himself healthy."
Doctors at the university had given Ochs clearance to play following a period where they were concerned the possible traumatic effects of football could have on his head.
"I don't know that Craig's career is over, but it is for this year," said Barnett. "He is stepping away, that's what it is. I think this whole thing has been hard on him because he's such a competitor and he wants to play."
Ochs suffered concussions in games last year against Kansas and Texas A&M and was hurt again this year, on Sept. 7 in a game against San Diego State. Ochs came to Colorado already having suffered a concussion in high school.
